Do you have any fasts left over from last Ramadhaan that you need to make up?
It could be due to ANY reason like sisters’ monthly issues, or due to sickness or travel.
If you do, then quickly make them up in this month of Sha’baan before it’s over.
That’s because it is not permissible to delay making up the fasts before the next Ramadhaan.
🍃 Our Mother Aaishah radhi Allaahu anhaa said:
“I used to have fasts that I still owed from Ramadhaan, and I could not make them up until Sha’baan, and that was because of the position of the Messenger ﷺ [as a husband].”
(al-Bukhaari 1950, Muslim 1146)
🍃 Al-Haafiz said:
“It may be understood from her keenness to fast them in Sha’baan that it is not permissible to delay making up fasts until the next Ramadhaan begins.”
🍃 The ulama said:
“According to the majority it is not permissible to delay making up missed Ramadhaan fasts until the next Ramadhaan with no excuse, because of this hadeeth of ‘Aa’ishah radhi Allaahu anhaa.”
(al-Mawsoo’ah al-Fiqhiyyah 28/76)
Whoever had an excuse for not making up the fasts until next Ramadhaan, such as sickness, pregnancy, or some hardship, etc is not to blame.
But whoever did not make up the fasts without any valid shar’ee excuse before next Ramadhaan is sinful.
You see, it’s like delaying the Salaah until the time for the next prayer.
So important it is to make up the fasts before next Ramadhaan that some of the scholars even said that if you don’t make up the fasts before next Ramadhaan then you must REPENT and even feed a poor person for each day of fasting that you missed.
But the stronger opinion is that it’s not obligatory to feed the poor.
It just shows the importance of making up the missed fasts within the year.
🍃Shaykh Ibn ‘Uthaymeen said:
“In this case, saying that it is obligatory to feed a poor person goes against the apparent meaning of the Qur’aan, because Allaah only enjoined making up the same number from other days, and He did not mention more than that.
Based on this, we should not oblige the slaves of Allaah to do any more than they need to fulfil their duty.
But what was narrated from Ibn 'Abbas and Abu Hurayrah may be interpreted as referring to what is mustahabb, not what is obligatory.
The correct view with regard to this issue is that a person does not have to do anything more than making up the missed fasts, but he is SINNING if he delays doing so.” (Al-Sharh al-Mumti’, 6/451)
So take advantage of the month of Sha’baan and FINISH your fasting from last year.
QUESTION
But wait a second.
Didn’t the Prophet ﷺ FORBID us from fasting in the second half of Sha’baan?
ANSWER
It’s true that the Prophet ﷺ said:
“When Sha’baan is halfway through, do not fast.”
(Abu Dawood, at-Tirmidhi - saheeh by al-Albaani)
This is a GENERAL prohibition and it’s DISCOURAGED to fast in the second half of Sha’baan for a person who’s not used to fasting, in case he becomes weak before Ramadhaan starts.
However, there are EXCEPTIONS to this prohibition such as:
- if a person is in the HABIT of fasting regularly like Mondays and Thursdays etc
- if a person has to MAKE UP a missed fast
In these situations it’s ALLOWED for us to fast in the second half of Sha’baan so that we can quickly make up any obligatory fasts that we may owe before the next Ramadhaan comes up.
🍃Imaam an-Nawawi said regarding this issue:
“If a person has to make up a day from Ramadhaan, then he has to fast it, because the time left for him to make it up has become very short.” (al-Majmoo’ (6/399)
You see, the obligatory fasts are a kind of DEBT that we owe our Rabb, Allaah Subhaanahu wa Ta’aala.
Isn’t it better to RETURN the DEBT to the LENDER as soon as possible?
So go ahead.
CLEAR your DEBT.
Make up any days that you have leftover before the upcoming Ramadhaan, while there’s still TIME...even if you have to fast in the last two weeks of Sha’baan.
And Allaah knows best.
