Bad smells and the Masjid

by Asma bint Shameem

Let us clean ourselves before we come to the masjid for Jumu’ah today and make sure we’re not smelling bad and annoying others.

🔺 Remember it’s Sunnah to bathe before Jumu’ah.

🍃 The Prophet Sal Allaahu Alaiyhi wa Sallam said:

“When any one of you goes to Jumu’ah, let him do ghusl.” (al-Bukhaari 882)

🔺Don’t eat anything with offensive smells

🍃 The Prophet Sal Allaahu Alaiyhi wa Sallam said:

“Whoever eats garlic or onions, let him keep away from us, or keep away from our masjid and stay in his house.”

(al-Bukhaari, Muslim)

🍃 And if he Sal Allaahu Alaiyhi wa Sallam noticed their smell coming from a man in the masjid, he would issue orders that he be taken out to al-Baqee’." (Saheeh Muslim 567)

🔺Even the angels don't like it!

🍃 The Prophet sal Allaahu Alayhi wa sallam said:

"The Angels are offended by the same things that offend the sons of Adam.” (Saheeh Muslim 564)

🌷 Shaikh ibn Baaz said:

"Everything that has an offensive smell is subject to the same ruling as garlic and onions, such as a smoker or a person who has an offensive smell in his armpits or other smells that are offensive to those with whom he sits.

It is makrooh for him to pray in congregation and he is not allowed to do that until he uses something to get rid of this smell.

He has to do that as much as he can, so that he do what Allaah has enjoined upon him and pray in congregation."

(Samaahat al-Shaykh ‘Abd al-‘Azeez ibn Baaz)

🌷So let's try not to annoy anyone at the masjid with ANY kind of bad smells.

Let's make sure we don't eat raw onions or garlic (or anything with a strong offensive smell) before we come to the masjid for Jumu’ah.

Let's check ourselves for body odor,

bad breath,

 smelly clothes and smelly socks.

That's because sometimes the person that's stinking, is our own self, without us realizing that!

And of course, no smoking!

Smoking is forbidden in any case under ALL circumstances.

🌷 Things to do before coming to the masjid.

Brush teeth

Use Miswaak

Take shower

Use deodorant

Make sure the underarm is shaved and clean

Wear “clean” clothes to the masjid

Make sure the clothes themselves don't smell of sweat, smoke, body odor or our dinner from last night.

Sisters, please make sure to change your abaayah as well as your clothes.

Sometimes the clothes are clean but the abaayah is the same old one that you use every time you go out. And it smells!

Remember that cleanliness is half of faith (Saheeh Muslim 223) and a very BASIC part of our Imaan.

🛑 IMPORTANT reminder for SISTERS

SISTERS please be clean but do NOT apply any perfume before you come to the masjid.

It’s prohibited and your prayer is not accepted.

🍃 The Prophet sal Allaahu Alayhi wa sallam said:

“If a woman comes out to the masjid and her fragrance is overpowering, Allaah will not accept any prayer from her until she goes home and washes herself.’”

(Abu Dawood, Ibn Maajah- Hasan by al-Albaani)

And Allaah knows best.
