Can I dye my hair? Will my wudhu or Salaah be valid?

by Asma bint Shameem

ANSWER

It’s allowed for anyone (man or woman) to dye their hair, whether it’s with Henna, other herbs or even commercial hair dyes.

However its best to avoid black.

🍃 The Prophet sal Allaahu Alayhi wa sallam said to the father of Abu Bakr radhi Allaahu anhu, who’s hair was all white:

"Change this with something, but avoid black." (Muslim)

🍃 And the Prophet Sal Allaahu Alaiyhi wa Sallam said:

“There will be people at the end of time who will dye their hair black like the crops of birds; they will never smell the fragrance of Paradise.”

(Abu Dawood 4212; saheeh by al-Albaani in Saheeh Abi Dawood)

So we can’t use ‘black’ but we can use dark brown or other shades to dye our hair.

🍃 The ulama said:

“Dyeing hair with pure black dye is not allowed because the Prophet Sal Allaahu Alaiyhi wa Sallam said:

"Avoid black," and because of the threat of punishment reported with regard to this matter.

This ruling applies to both men and women.

But if the black dye is mixed with another color, so that it is no longer black, there is nothing wrong with it.”

(Fatawa Islamiyyah, 4/424, and Fatawa al-mar’ah al-Muslimah, 2/520)

🔺 What if my hair is naturally black❓

The overwhelming majority of us do NOT have JET BLACK hair.

For those who have dark hair, their hair is closer to dark ‘brown’, some darker than others but generally in the range of ‘brown’.

And it’s allowed to dye the hair in that shade even if it’s dark, dark brown.

🔺 What about dyeing the hair purple, green, pink etc?

🍃 Someone asked Shaikh Ibn Baaz about that.

The Shaikh said:

“If it is pure black, then it is not allowed for both men or women.

If he dyes using yellow or green or other than that, then there is no harm.

However, the Prophet sallahu alayhi wa salam prohibited pure black.

He Sal Allaahu Alaiyhi wa Sallam said:

“Change this, but avoid black.”

So it is not allowed to use pure black, not for a woman nor a man.

If he changes the white hair with other than black (such as) with black mixed with henna or with red or with yellow, then there is no harm”

🍃 Someone asked the scholars of the Standing Committee if it was allowed to dye the hair red or black.

The scholars said:

“There is nothing wrong with changing the hair color to anything except black, or using something to straighten curly hair, and the ruling is the same for old men and young men, so long as harmful substances are avoided and the material used is pure and permissible.

But changing the hair to pure black is not permitted, for men or for women, because the Prophet ﷺ said:

“Change this grey hair, but avoid black.

And Allaah is the Source of strength.”

(Fataawaa al-Lajnah al-Daimah 5/168)

It’s allowed to even dye your hair red or yellow.

🍃 Ibn 'Abbas radhi Allaahu anhu said:

“A man who had dyed his hair with henna passed by the Prophet ﷺ and he said: “How handsome this is.”

Then another who had dyed his hair with henna and katam passed by and he said,

“This is more handsome.” Then another who had dyed his hair yellow passed by and he said: “This one is more handsome than all the others.”

(Abu Dawud 4211, Mishkaat al-Masabih: Shaykh al-Albaani said regarding the isnaad “it is jayyid (good)”

But do be careful not to dye the hair in weird colors, such that it resembles immoral, or corrupt people or represents a certain ‘cult’ or gang etc.

So it’s best to avoid that.

🍃 The Prophet sal Allaahu Alayhi wa sallam said:

“Whoever imitates a people is one of them.” (Abu Dawood- saheeh by al-Albaani)

🔺What about Wudhu and Ghusl? Is my Salaah valid if my hair is dyed❓

Wudhu and ghusl is absolutely complete with your hair dyed. And the Salaah is valid.

That’s because the hair dye is not a ‘coating’ or ‘covering’ over the hair that would prevent water from reaching the hair.

It’s the hair shaft itself that gets dyed.

That’s just plain science.

🔺What about ‘bleaching/highlighting the hair❓

There’s nothing wrong with bleaching or highlighting your hair, whether partly or fully, as long as your hair is covered in front of nonmahrams and you observe the rules of hijaab.

And the dye itself is not harmful to you.

This comes under the ‘beautification’ that women usually do.

🍃Someone asked Shaykh Muhammad ibn ‘Uthaymeen about the ruling on a woman dyeing her hair any color other than black, such as brown or blond.

Shaykh Ibn ‘Uthaymeen said:

“The basic principle is that this is permissible, so long as it does not lead to resembling kaafir women or immoral women, because that is haraam.”

(Majmoo’ Fataawaa Ibn ‘Uthaymeen 11/120)

And Allaah knows best.
