Five Different ways of Dhikr after Salaah

by Asma bint Shameem

The Prophet ﷺ would make Tasbeeh (say Subhaan Allaah), Tahmeed (say Alhamdulillaah) and Takbeer (say Allaahu Akbar) after every Fardh Salaah.

We’re commonly taught in Pakistan and India to say Subhaan Allaah “33“ times,  Alhamdulillaah “33” times, and Allaahu Akbar ”34” times.

But that’s not the “ONLY” way to say this Dhikr after Salaah.

The are several “other” ways of saying this beautiful Dhikr, that’s proven from the authentic ahaadeeth.

The Five different authentic ways of saying Dhikr after Salaah are:

1️⃣ Saying Subhaan Allaah “33“ times,  Alhamdulillaah “33” times, and Allaahu Akbar ”34” times.

🍃The Prophet ﷺ said:

"There are some words, the reciters of which will never be disappointed.

These are:

Tasbeeh (saying 'Subhaan Allaah’) thirty-three times,

Tahmeed (saying ‘Alhamdulillaah’) thirty-three times and

Takbeer (saying Allaahu Akbar') thirty-four times; and these should be recited after the conclusion of every prescribed prayer."

(Saheeh Muslim, 596).

2️⃣ Saying Subhaan Allaah “33” times, Alhamdulillaah “33” times, Allaahu Akbar “33” times, followed by

“La ilaaha ila Allaah wahdahu laa sharika lah, lahul mulku wa lahul hamdu wa huwa ‘alaa kulli shai’in qadeer”.

🍃 The Prophet sal Allaahu Alayhi wa sallam said:

“If you say:

Subhaan Allaah thirty-three times

Alhamdulillaah thirty-three times and Allaahu Akbar thirty-three times, and completes the figure of hundred with the recitation of

(“None has the right to be worshipped but Allaah and He has no partner, for Him is the kingdom and all the praises and thanks are for Him and he is Omnipotent”)

to complete a hundred, your sins will be forgiven even if they are as abundant as the foam of the sea" (Saheeh Muslim 146)

3️⃣ Saying Subhaan Allaah “33” times, Alhamdulillaah “33” times, and Allaahu Akbar “33” times (without the addition of La Ilaaha illallaah....)

🍃 Abu Huraira radhi Allaahu anhu reported:

“The poor emigrants came to the Messenger of Allaah,Sal Allaahu Alaiyhi wa Sallam and they said,

“The wealthy have taken the highest degrees and blessed ranks.”

The Prophet said, “How is that?”

They said, “They pray as we pray, they fast as we fast, they give in charity and we do not have charity to give, they free slaves and we have none to free.”

The Prophet said, “Shall I teach you something by which you will reach those ahead of you, surpass those after you, and by which no one will be better than you but one who does like you?”

They said, “Of course, O Messenger of Allaah.”

The Prophet ﷺ said, “Glorify (say Subhaan Allaah),

and exalt (say Allaahu Akbar) and praise Allaah (say Alhamdulillaah) thirty three times after every prayer.”

(al-Bukhaari, 807, Muslim, 595).

4️⃣ Saying Subhaan Allaah “10” times,  Alhamdulillaah “10” times, and Allaahu Akbar “10” times.

🍃 The people said:

“Oh Messenger of Allaah!

The rich people have got the highest degrees of prestige and the permanent pleasures (in this life and the life to come in the Hereafter). He said, How is that?

They said:

The rich pray as we pray, and strive in Allaah’s  Cause as we do, and spend from their surplus wealth in charity, while we have no wealth (to spend likewise).”

He said:

“Shall I not tell you a thing, by doing which, you will catch up with those who are ahead of you and supersede those who will come after you; and nobody will be able to do such a good deed as you do except the one who does the same (deed as you do)?

That deed is to recite 'Subhaan Allaah ten times, and ‘Alhamdulillaah’ ten times, and 'Allaahu Akbar' ten times after every prayer.” (al-Bukhaari 6329)

🍃And in another narration, the Prophet ﷺ  said:

“There are two characteristics that whenever the Muslim maintains them will enter Jannah.

These two traits are easy to possess. However, only a few people acquire them.

Say “ Subhaan Allaah” ten times,

“Alhamdulillaah” ten times and “Allaahu Akbar” ten times at the end of each Salaah...”

(Abu Dawud, at-Tirmithi and others; authentic by al-Albaani in Saheeh at-Targheeb wat-Tarheeb)

5️⃣ Saying Subhaan Allaah 25 times, Alhamdulillaah 25 times, Allaahu Akbar 25 times, and “Laa ilaaha illallaah” 25 times.

🍃 Ibn 'Umar radhi Allaahu anhu said:

“A man from among the Ansaar was asked in a dream:

“Did the Messenger of Allaah Sal Allaahu Alayhi wa Sallam command you to say the Tasbeeh (Subhaan Allaah) thirty-three times after the prayer, and to say the Tahmeed (Alhamdulillaah) thirty-three times, and to say the Takbeer (Allaahu Akbar) thirty-four times?”

He said: “Yes.”

It was said:

“Instead, make each one twenty-five times, and include the Tahleel (laa ilaaha illallaah) among them.”

The next morning he came to the Messenger of Allaah Sal Allaahu Alayhi wa Sallam and told him about that, and he said:

“Do that.”

(an-Nasaa’i 1350; saheeh by al-Albaani)

There is also the wording:

“Say the Tasbeeh 25 times, say the Tahmeed 25 times, say the Takbeer 25 times and say the Tahleel (Laa ilaaha illallaah) 25 times, and that will make one hundred.”

‎سبحان الله والحمد لله ولا إله إلا الله والله أكبر

The following morning he told the Prophet Sal Allaahu Alayhi wa Sallam about that and the Messenger of Allaah Sal Allaahu Alayhi wa Sallam said:

Do what the Ansaari said.”

(An-Nasaa’i 1351; Saheeh by al-Albaani)

Alhamdulillaah, we can use any of these different ways of Tasbeehaat after Salaah.

Remember however...

Don’t just “say” the words with a heedless mind.

Attach your HEART to it.

And Allaah knows best
