Is it allowed to take the “Ramadhaan pill” (oral contraceptive pills) to delay your menses for Ramadhaan?

ANSWER

It’s allowed to use oral contraceptive pills to prevent menses IF they’re not harmful for you.

🍃 The Standing Committee for Issuing Fatwas said:

“It is permissible for a woman to use pills to delay her period at the time of Hajj if she fears she may get her period, but that is only after consulting a specialized doctor to make sure that this will not affect her health.

She may do likewise in Ramadhaan if she wants to fast with the people.”

(Fataawa al-Jaami’ah li’l-Mar’ah al-Muslimah, 2/495)

However, having said that, although taking these pills to delay your menses is “permissible”, is it really “desirable”?

Speaking as a doctor, I personally do not recommend taking these pills “just so that you can fast the whole month of Ramadhaan” since it is possible that these pills may mess up your cycle or have other side effects.

Millions and millions of women throughout history have been fasting in Ramadhaan without these pills and they easily make up the days after Ramadhaan.

It’s not a big deal.

This situation is different from taking pills to delay the menses during Hajj.

Hajj is a once in a lifetime journey for most people and it’s not easy to go to Hajj again and again.

That’s why it is recommended to take these pills during hajj so you can perform this rare act of Ibaadah free of menses.

As for Ramadhaan, it comes every year and we can easily make up the days after Ramadhaan.

Besides, not all women are able to take these pills due to medical contraindications.

In such cases, there’s no need to worry.

Allaah knows your intentions and knows you want to worship Him.

You don’t really need to be “menses-free” to do ibaadah even if it’s Ramadhaan or its last ten days.

You can listen to the Qur’aan, make duaa, dhikr, istighfaar, etc.

You can even READ the Qur’aan without touching it directly.

That’s because there’s no proof that a woman in her period cannot read the Qur’aan.

Besides all this, DO realize that “NOT reading Salaah or fasting while on your menses” is ALSO ibaadah.

Who told you to pray and fast?

Of course that’s Allaah.

And Who told you NOT to pray and fast during your menses?

That is ALSO Allaah.

So when you’re NOT praying and fasting in Ramadhaan because of your menses,

you’re still OBEYING Allaah.

You’re SUBMITTING to Allaah’s Orders.

And submission to Him is what ibaadah is all about.

However, if it’s hard for you to make up the days after Ramadhaan due to whatever reason, or if you feel that by not taking these pills, you’ll lose focus in your ibaadah in Ramadhaan because of your menses, then there’s no problem in taking these pills. But check with your doctor before taking these pills.

And Allaah knows best.
