Sending peace and blessings on our beloved Prophet ﷺ is a very good and noble deed that earns us rewards.
However, it’s not proven from the Sunnah to send salutations on the Prophet ﷺ in sujood before making duaa.
🍃 Imaam ibnul Qayyim said:
“Sending blessings upon the Messenger of Allaah sal Allahu alayhi wa sallam, although it is one of the best and most beloved of deeds to Allaah, every dhikr has its own place and time, where no other can take its place.
[Jala’ al-Afhaam (1/424)]
You see, du’aa is of two types, general and specific.
1.“General” du’aa is that which a person says on his own, using his own words, but at certain times or in certain places prescribed by the Sharee’ah.
For example making duaa’ in the last third of the night, or making duaa at the time of breaking the fast, or duaa’ between the adhaan and iqaamah, etc.
The scholars say that this is a “general” duaa and it is recommended to send Durood on the Prophet Sal Allaahu Alaiyhi wa Sallam before supplicating to Allaah Subhaanahu wa Ta’aala.
We should also include praise of Allaah.
2. The “specific” kind of du’aa’ is duaas which are said when entering or leaving a place, or when certain things happen.
For example, duaa to be said when entering and exiting the bathroom, when putting on clothes, when beginning to eat, when we enter or leave our homes, etc.
This is the kind of duaa, the scholars say that we do NOT send Durood on the Prophet Sal Allaahu Alaiyhi wa Sallam, except in a few cases such as the duaa’ for entering the masjid and the duaa’ after the adhaan.
And there are other duaas from the authentic Sunnah where it is not mentioned that we should send Durood on him Sal Allaahu Alaiyhi wa Sallam.
So we should do accordingly.
When we look at the different duaas that the Prophet Sal Allaahu Alaiyhi wa Sallam used to make in the sajdah, we see that he Sal Allaahu Alaiyhi wa Sallam did not teach us to send Durood on him in this position.
In any case, when we pray, we’re sending Durood on the Prophet Sal Allaahu Alaiyhi wa Sallam anyway, when we read Durood Ibraheem, (al-salaah al-Ibraaheemiyyah).
So our prayer automatically includes Durood on the Prophet sal Allaahu Alayhi wa sallam.
And Allaah knows best
