by Asma bint Shameem Allaah Subhaanahu wa Ta’aala has instructed us to send blessings and peace (Salaat and Salaams) upon the Prophet ﷺ.
🍃 He says:
“Allaah sends His Salaah (Graces, Honors, Blessings, Mercy, Praise) on the Prophet (Muhammad), and also His angels (ask Allaah to bless and forgive him).
O you who believe! send your Salaah on (ask Allaah to bless) him (Muhammad), and (you should) greet (salute) him with the Islamic way of greeting (salutation, i.e. As‑Salaamu ‘Alaykum)”[al-Ahzaab 33:56].
Sending salutations and Durood on the Prophet ﷺ is one of the most noble and beloved deeds to Allaah Subhaanahu wa Ta’aala.
So we should do it often and do it in the best possible way.
However we must take caution in the words we choose because a lot of the “man-made” Durood contain words of shirk and exaggeration.
So we must be very careful and there’s no need to recite them.
The BEST way to send Salaat and Salaams on the Prophet ﷺ is the way he Sal Allaahu Alaiyhi wa Sallam himself taught us.
Why go for something that’s
“man-made” even if the words are free of shirk, when we have the words from the Prophet ﷺ himself?
🍃The Prophet Sal Allaahu Alaiyhi wa Sallam said: “The best of guidance is the guidance of Muhammad Sal Allaahu Alaiyhi wa Sallam.” (Saheeh Muslim 867).
Whatever the Prophet ﷺ taught, that is the best way.
And that should be the most beloved to us.
🍃 The Sahaabah said to the Prophet Sal Allaahu Alaiyhi wa Sallam:
“O Messenger of Allaah, we know how to send salaams upon you, but how should we send blessings upon you?
1️⃣ He said: “Say:
“Allaahumma salli ‘ala Muhammadin wa ‘ala aali Muhammadin kama salayta ‘ala aali Ibraaheem, innaka hameedun majeed; Allaahumma baarik ‘ala Muhammadin wa ‘ala aali Muhammadin kama baarakta ‘ala aali Ibraaheem, innaka hameedun majeed”.
“O Allaah, send Your salaah (grace, honor and mercy) upon Muhammad and upon the family of Muhammad, as You sent Your salaah upon the family of Ibraaheem, You are indeed Praiseworthy, Most Glorious. O Allaah, send Your blessings upon Muhammad and the family of Muhammad, as You sent Your blessings upon the family of Ibraaheem, You are indeed Praiseworthy, Most Glorious.”
[al-Bukhaari (3700) and Muslim (406)]
2️⃣ Another way the Prophet sal Allaahu Alayhi wa sallam taught them is to say:
“O Allaah, send Your salaah (grace, honor and mercy) upon Muhammad and upon his wives and offspring, as You sent Your salaah upon Ibraaheem, and send Your blessings upon Muhammad and upon his wives and offspring, as You sent Your blessings upon the family of Ibraaheem.
You are indeed Praiseworthy, Most Glorious.”
[al-Bukhaari (3369) and Muslim (407)]
And there are other forms.
Sending Salaat and Salaam with these words upon the Prophet ﷺ is the best and the most complete.
This is for the prayer.
But you may say the short form of salutations outside the prayer.
🍃 Al-Haafiz ibn Hajar said:
“The majority of scholars think that any wording that fulfills the purpose of sending blessings upon him is acceptable, but in the prayer one should keep to the wording that has been narrated and not omit any part of it, so as to be sure of following the Sunnah and what is narrated from the Prophet Sal Allaahu Alaiyhi wa Sallam.”
(Fath al-Baari 11/166)
So for example we may say:
الهم صل على محمد و على آل محمد و بارك و سلم
O Allaah, send Your mercy on Muhammad and on the family of Muhammad and send Your blessings and Your peace.
Or
“Allahumma salli wa sallim ‘ala Muhammad
May Allaah send blessings and peace upon Muhammad.
or
“sall-Allahu ‘alayhi wa sallam
“may Allaah send blessings and peace upon him” etc.
🔺Keep in mind that it’s better to include both “blessings” and “salaams”, when we want to send salutations on the Prophet ﷺ.
🍃 Imaam an-Nawawi said:
“When a person sends blessings upon the Prophet Sal Allaahu Alaiyhi wa Sallam, let him combine the salaah (sending blessings) and the tasleem (sending salaams), and not limit it to only one of them.
So he should not say “Sall Allahu ‘alayhi (May Allah send blessings upon him)” only, or “ ‘alayhi as-salaam (upon whom be peace)” only. [al-Adhkaar (p. 107)]
🍃 And Al-Haafiz ibn Hajar said:
“The scholars have stated that it is makrooh for a person to always mention salaah (blessings) without salaam (greeting of peace), or to always mention salaam without salaah.
But if he mentions both of them, or mentions salaah on its own sometimes, or salaam on its own sometimes, then he is following the verse.”
(Fath al-Baari, 11/167)
And Allaah knows best
