Making Duaa to Allaah is one of the most beloved acts of ibaadah to Allaah.
It shows our humility and our need of Him Subhaanahu wa Ta’aala.
🍃The Prophet sal Allaahu Alayhi wa sallam said:
“There is nothing dearer to Allaah than du’aa’.”
(at-Tirmidhi ; hasan by al-Albaani)
🍃And he Sal Allaahu Alaiyhi wa Sallam said:
“Whoever does not ask of Allaah, He becomes angry with him.” (at-Tirmidhi; hasan by al-Albaani)
So how should we make duaa and what are some of the etiquettes?
1️. Belief in Tawheed
If we want our duaas to be accepted, the first and most important step is to believe in Tawheed with regard to the Lordship, uboodiyah and the Names and Attributes of Allaah.
🍃Allaah says :
“And when My slaves ask you (O Muhammad) concerning Me, then (answer them), I am indeed near (to them by My Knowledge). I respond to the invocations of the supplicant when he calls on Me (without any mediator or intercessor). So let them obey Me and believe in Me, so that they may be led aright”
(Surah al-Baqarah:186)
2️. Sincerity
Be sincere towards Allaah alone in making du’aa as duaa is worship.
🍃Allaah says:
“So do not invoke or call upon anyone along with Allaah.” (Surah Jinn:18)
This is a command from Allaah clearly and directly so make duaa purely for Allaah Subhaanahu wa Ta’aala Alone.
And as Duaa is an act of Ibaadah, sincerity (ikhlaas) is a condition of its being accepted.
🍃The Prophet sal Allaahu Alayhi wa sallam said:
“Du’aa’ is worship.” (al-Tirmidhi -saheeh by al-Albaani)
3️. Humble yourself in front of Allaah, the Master and Creator of the heavens and earth, fearing His punishment and hoping for His reward.
This is the essence and purpose of Duaa.
Beseech Allaah like a beggar, with humility, hope and fear.
🍃Allaah says :
‘Supplicate to your Lord humbly and secretly…and supplicate to Him in fear and hope.’ (al-A’raaf: 55 )
4️. Praise Allaah as that befits His Majesty, before calling upon Him.
🍃The Prophet ﷺ said:
“When one of you prays, let him start with praise of Allaah, then let him send blessings upon the Prophet ﷺ, then let him ask whatever he likes after that.”
(at Tirmidhi 3477)
5️. Call upon Allaah with His most Beautiful Names.
🍃Allaah says :
“And (all) the Most Beautiful Names belong to Allaah, so call on Him by them, and leave the company of those who belie or deny (or utter impious speech against) His Names” ( al-A’raaf ayat 180 )
6️. Send peace and blessings upon the Prophet sal Allaahu Alayhi wa sallam
🍃The Prophet ﷺ said:
“Every du’a is kept back until you send blessings upon the Prophet ﷺ.”
(al-Tabaraani in al-Awsat, 1/220; saheeh by al-Albaani in Saheeh al-Jaami’, 4399)
7️. Say your duaa with your heart ATTACHED to the duaa, having GOOD HOPE with Allaah and BELIEVE that He will respond
🍃The Prophet ﷺ said:
“Call upon Allaah when you are certain of a response, and remember that Allaah will not answer a du’a that comes from a negligent and heedless heart.” { al-Tirmidhi 3479; hasan by al-Albaani in Saheeh al-Tirmidhi 2766)
8️. Face the qiblah
🍃Umar ibn al-Khattaab Radi’allahu anhu said:
“On the day of Badr, the Prophet ﷺ looked at the mushrikeen, who were one thousand strong, and his companions numbered three hundred and nineteen.
Then the Prophet ﷺ turned to face the qiblah, then he stretched forth his hands and started to cry out to his Lord:
“O Allaah, grant me what You have promised me, O Allaah, give me what You have promised me. O Allaah, if this small band of Muslims perishes, You will not be worshipped on earth.” (Saheeh Muslim 1763)
9️. Raise your hands
🍃The Prophet ﷺ said:
“Your Lord Subhaanahu wa Ta’aala is Kind and Most Generous, and He is too kind to let His slave, if he raises his hands to Him, bring them back empty.”
( Abu Dawood 1488; saheeh by Shaykh al-Albaani in Saheeh Abi Dawood, 1320 )
🔺 Should the hands be held together when raising them or should there be a gap between them?
They should be held together.
🍃Shaykh Ibn ‘Uthaymeen said:
“As for separating them and holding them far apart from one another, there is no basis for that in the Sunnah or in the words of the scholars.”
(al-Sharh al-Mumti’ 4/25)
10. Repeat duaa three times
🍃Ibn Mas’ood Radhi Allaahu anhu reported:
“The Messenger of Allaah Sal Allaahu Alayhi wa Sallam, when he would supplicate, he would supplicate three times, and when he would ask Allaah, he would ask three times.”
(al-Bukhaari 240 and Muslim 1794)
1️1. Keep making duaa even if it seems like you’ve been making duaa for so long.
Don’t be hasty or impatient. Rather, ask frequently with patience and consistency.
🍃The Prophet ﷺ said:
“The slave will receive a response so long as his duaa does not involve sin or severing of family ties, and so long as he is not hasty.”
It was said, “What does being hasty mean?”
He said: “When he says, ‘I made duaa and I made duaa and I have not seen any response,’ and he gets frustrated and stops making duaa.”(Saheeh al-Bukahari 6340, Muslim 2735)
🍃And the Prophet ﷺ said:
“No Muslim makes du‘aa which does not entail a sin or the severing of ties of kinship without Allaah giving him one of three:
1. He fulfils his duaa immediately.
2. He stores it for him in the hereafter.
3. He averts from him a similar evil.”
The Companions Radhi Allaahu anhum said: “If that is so, we will make duaa’ even more.”
He ﷺ replied: “Allaah will respond even more.” (Aḥmad)
12. Be firm in duaa and don’t say “In Shaa’ Allaah” when asking.
🍃That’s because the Prophet ﷺ said:
“No one of you should say, ‘O Allaah, forgive me if You wish, O Allaah, have mercy on me if You wish’; he should be firm in his asking, for Allaah cannot be compelled.” (al-Bukhaari 6339 and Muslim 2679)
13. Don’t transgress when making duaa like saying things that are inappropriate or asking for things that are impossible like asking to live for ever or asking to see Allaah in this life, etc
🍃The Prophet ﷺ said:
“There will be among this ummah people who overstep the mark in purification and supplication.”
(Abu Dawood (96) ; saheeh by al-Albaani)
🍃Ibn al-Qayyim said:
“Any request that is contrary to the wisdom of Allaah, or implies going against His laws and commands, or implies going against what He has told us, comes under the heading of overstepping the mark, which Allaah does not love and He does not love the one who makes such a request.”
[Badaa’i‘ al-Fawaa’id (3/524)]
14. Make duaa for yourself first.
Then your parents, spouse and kids, then your other family and relatives, then your community, then the Ummah.
🍃Nooh Alaiyhis-Salaatu was-Salaam said:
‘My Lord! Forgive me, and my parents, and him who enters my home as a believer, and all the believing men and women.’”
(Surah Nooh :28)
🍃And Ibraheem Alaiyhis-Salaatu was-Salaam said:
“Our Lord! Forgive me and my parents, and (all) the believers on the Day when the reckoning will be established”
(Surah Ibraaheem :41)
1️5. Make lots of duaa in times of ease.
🍃The Prophet ﷺ said:
“Remember Allaah during times of ease and He will remember you during times of hardship.” (Ahmad)
1️6. Stay away from sins and make sure that your earning is halaal.
🍃The Prophet ﷺ said regarding a man who travels for a long distance and is disheveled and dusty, and he stretches forth his hands towards heaven saying, ‘O Lord, O Lord,’ but his food is haraam, his drink is haraam, his clothing is haraam, he has been nourished with haraam, so how can he be responded to ? (Saheeh Muslim 1015)
1️7. Be ambitious and ask for everything from the good of the dunya and Aakhirah.
Do not limit your duaas to just small matters in difficult times.
Remember, NOTHING is too big for the One being asked and nothing is too small for the one asking Him.
🍃The Prophet ﷺ said:
“When one of you asks for something from Allaah, then let him be plentiful (in what he asks for), for indeed he is asking his Lord.” (Ibn Hibbaan)
🍃In another ḥadeeth, he said:
“There are a hundred levels in Paradise specially prepared by Allaah for the mujahideen in His cause.
Between each level and the next is the difference between the heaven and earth.
So when you ask Allaah, ask Him to grant you al Firdaus.
It is in the middle of Paradise and the highest part of it. From it the rivers of Paradise spring, and above it is the throne of Allaah.”
(al-Bukhaari)
1️8. End with peace and blessings upon the Prophet sal Allaahu Alayhi wa sallam
19. Special times
Make duaa when it’s more likely to be answered, such as:
-in the middle of the night
- in your sujood WHILE you’re praying your Salaah.
-in the tashahhud (after sending peace and blessings upon the Prophet sal Allaahu Alayhi wa sallam but before tasleem)
- in between adhaan and iqaamah
- when you break your fast
- in all the places in Makkah, Madeenah and Arafah. (While making Tawaaf, on top of Safa and Marwah, after throwing stones at the small and medium Jamaraat, during the days in Mina)
-during laylatul Qadr
- when it rains
And at other times and places.
And Allaah knows best
