Ruqyah is reading Aayaat from the Qur’aan, authentic Duaas from the Sunnah of the Prophet sal Allaahu Alayhi wa sallam or other duaas seeking a healing from Allaah Alone, against sickness, disease, evil eye, magic etc.
The secret behind this is that one puts his FULL trust, reliance and dependance in Allaah, the source of ALL healing and cure.
The Prophet sal Allaahu Alayhi wa sallam performed ruqyah on himself and on others and when he was sick, Aaishah radhi Allaahu anhaa read it for him.
The Sunnah is to do it in odd numbers.
It is permissible to have it done to you without asking for it and it is also permissible to ask someone to do it for you, but this is not recommended.
🍃 Our Mother Aaishah radhi Allaahu anhaa said:
“When the Messenger of Allaah Sal Allaahu Alaiyhi wa Sallam was ill, he would recite al-Mi’wadhatayn over himself and spit drily. When his pain grew intense, I recited over him and wiped him with his own hand, seeking its barakah (blessing).”
(al-Bukhaari, Muslim)
🔺Can you do ruqyah for someone else?
Yes that’s allowed.
The Prophet Sal Allaahu Alaiyhi wa Sallam did ruqyah for al-Hasan and al-Hussain radhi Allaahu anhumaa.
🍃Ibn ‘Abbaas radhi Allaahu anhu said:
“The Prophet Sal Allaahu Alaiyhi wa Sallam used to seek refuge for al-Hasan and al-Husayn, and he would say: “Your father (meaning Ibraaheem Alaiyhis-Salaam) used to seek refuge with Allaah for Ismaa’eel and Is’haaq with these words:
A’oodhu bi kalimaat Allaah al-taammah min kulli shaytaanin wa haammah wa min kulli ‘aynin laammah”
“ I seek refuge in the perfect words of Allaah, from every devil and every poisonous reptile, and from every evil eye.”
(al-Bukhaari)
🍃And he Sal Allaahu Alaiyhi wa Sallam also taught the Sahaabah how to read ruqyah on themselves.
When one Sahaabi was suffering from pain, the Prophet sal Allaahu Alayhi wa sallam said:
“Put your hand on the part of your body where you feel pain and say ‘Bismillaah three times, then say seven times, ‘A’oodhu bi ‘izzat-illaah wa qudratihi min sharri ma ajid wa uhaadhir.”
“I seek refuge in the glory and power of Allaah from the evil of what I feel and worry about.” (Muslim)
In at-Tirmidhi, it says:
“He said, I did that, and Allaah took away what I had been suffering, and I kept on enjoining my family and others to do that.”
(at-Tirmidhi -saheeh by al-Albaani)
And so this proves that ruqyah is very much a part of our Deen and we should utilize this means as a healing for our sicknesses.
🍃 Shaikh Ibn Uthaymeen said:
Ruqyah is of four types:
- that which is mentioned in the Sunnah – it is prescribed and mustahabb to use it as ruqyah;
-that which is shirk or bid‘ah (an innovation) – it is haram (impermissible) to use it as ruqyah;
- that which is a permissible duaa in which there is no shirk or bid‘ah, but it is not something that was narrated from the Prophet Sal Allaahu Alaiyhi wa Sallam.
It is permissible to use this as ruqyah.
Hence the Prophet Sal Allaahu Alaiyhi wa Sallam said concerning ruqyah:
“There is nothing wrong with it so long as it is not shirk.”
(Fataawaa Noor ‘ala ad-Darb)
🔺How to perform Ruqyah?
You can recite Ruqyah on yourself by gathering the palms of your hands and reciting the Aayaat and authentic Duaas into them and then blow in your hands and wipe over yourself or over the area that is ill/hurting you.
You can also take water (preferably zam zam) and recite 3, 5 or 7 times over it and blow every time you recite.
🍃 Read Al Faatihah, Aayatul Kursy, the last 2 verses of Suratul Baqarah and the last 3 Surah of the Qur’aan.
You can add to that any Prophetic Dua’a and blow on it.
Drink from this water in the morning , in the afternoon and before going to bed and also you can wipe with it over the places that hurt you.”
🍃 Put your hand on the part of your body where you feel pain and say ‘Bismillaah (in the name of Allah) three times, then say seven times
“Aa’oodhu bi ‘izzat-illaahi wa qudratihi min sharri ma ajidu wa uhaadhir”
“I seek refuge in the glory and power of Allaah from the evil of what I feel and worry about”
🍃 You can also read 3 times
“Aa’oodhu bi kalimaatillaahit-taammah min kulli shaytaanin wa haammatin wa min kulli ‘aynin laammah”
“Say I seek refuge in Allah’s perfect words against every devil and every poisonous reptile and against every evil eye”
🍃 And also say three times
“Allaahumma Rabbann-Naas Adh’hib al-ba’s washfi antash-Shaafi laa shifaa’a illaa shifaa’uka shifaa’an laa yughaadir saqamaa”
“Allaahumma you are the Rabb of mankind; remove the harm and heal; you are the Healer.
There is no healing but Your healing, a healing which leaves no disease behind it.”
🍃 Another duaa to read is duaa. Read this three times when performing ruqyah for others.
“Bismillaahi arqeek, min kulli shay’in yu’dheek, wa min kulli nafssin aw ‘aynin haassidin, Allaahu yashfeek, Bismillaahi arqeek”
“In the name of Allaah I perform ruqyah for you, from everything that is harming you, from the evil of every soul or envious eye may Allaah heal you, in the name of Allaah I perform ruqyah for you”
🍃 When reading this duaa on one’s own self, you should say the following duaa three times
“Bismillaahi arqeeni, min kulli shay’in yu’dheeni, wa min kul nafssin aw ‘aynin haasidin Allaahu yashfeeni, Bismillaahi arqeeni”
🍃 Shaikh Ibn Uthaymeen said:
“If a person blows with saliva after reciting Qur’aan, such as al-Faatihah – which is a kind of ruqyah and is the greatest kind of ruqyah that may be recited over a sick person – so he recites al-Faatihah then blows into the water – there is nothing wrong with this.
Some of the salaf did this, and it is effective and beneficial by Allaah’s leave.
The Prophet Sal Allaahu Alaiyhi wa Sallam used to blow into his hands when going to sleep, after reciting Qul Huwa Allaahu Ahad, and Qul A’oodhu bi Rabbi’l-Falaq and Qul ‘A’oodhu bi Rabbi’l-Naas, then he would wipe his hands over his face and whatever he could of his body.
And Allaah is the Source of strength.”
(Fataawa Al-Shaykh Ibn ‘Uthaymeen, 1/107)
🔺 Different ways to do Ruqyah
There are different ways of doing Ruqyah.
Shaykh Ali At-Tuwayjiree mentions them in his book.
He said:
1. Ruqyah by way of reading/reciting only:
Proof:
Our Mother Aaishah radhi Allaahu anhaa said that when the Prophet Sal Allaahu Alaiyhi wa Sallam used to come to a sick one or a sick one was brought to him he would say:
اللهم رب الناس، أذهب البأس، واشف، أنت الشافي لا شفاء إلا شفاؤك، شفاءً لا يغادر سقماً
And he mentions other reports
2. Doing Ruqya by reading along with blowing air without any saliva, whether one blows the air along with reading or after it.
Proof:
Aaishah radhi Allaahu anhaa said that the Prophet Sal Allaahu Alaiyhi wa Sallam would blow air whilst doing Ruqyah.” (an-Nasaa’i, Ibn Maajah, Ibn Abu Shaybah; saheeh by al-Albaani)
3. Doing Ruqyah while reading, along with blowing with some saliva mixed with it:
Proof:
Abu Sa’eed Al Khudree radhi Allaahu anhu said:
“That he recited Umm-ul-Qur’aan (Surah al-Faatihah), and he collected his spittle and he applied that and the person became all right.”
4. Ruqyah by reading and wiping
From the Sunnah of the Prophet Sal Allaahu Alaiyhi wa Sallam was that he would wipe his right hand on the sick whilst reading Ruqyah upon him.
Proof:
Aa’ishah radhi Allaahu anhaa said:
“When the Prophet Sal Allaahu Alaiyhi wa Sallam visited any ailing member of his family, he would touch the sick person with his right hand and would supplicate:
“Allaahumma Rabban-naas, adhhibil-ba’s, washfi, Antash-Shaafi, laa shifaa’a illaa shifaa’uka, shifaa’an laa yughaadiru saqama
“O Allaah! the Rabb of mankind! Remove this disease and cure (him or her)! You are the Great Curer. There is no cure but through You, which leaves behind no disease.” (al-Bukhaari)
5. Ruqyah whilst reading and placing the hand upon the place which is in pain, then wiping it:
Saad Ibn Abi Waqqas Radiallaahu anhu said:
“I had a complaint at Mecca.
The Messenger of Allaah Sal Allaahu Alaiyhi wa Sallam came to pay a sick-visit to me.
He put his hand on my forehead, wiped my chest and belly, and then said:
“O Allaah! Heal up Sa’d and complete his migration.” (al-Bukhaari)
6. Ruqyah while reading and blowing air whilst wiping.
7. Ruqyah while reading, placing saliva upon the finger, then placing the finger on the earth, and then on the sick:
Proof:
“In the Name of Allaah, the earth of our land and the saliva of some of us cure our patient.”(al-Bukhaari)
Some of the scholars were of the opinion that the words “the earth of our land”, specifically refer to the earth (sand) of Madeenah.
But the majority of the scholars including Imaam an-Nawawi, Ibn al-Qayyim, Shaykh Ali At Tuwayjiri, and Shaykh Abdul Muhsin say that the correct stance is that the words are general and apply to “any” land because there is no proof to specify it.
8. Reading whilst placing salt in water, then wiping that upon the place of pain:
Proof:
Ali radhi Allaahu anhu reported that when the Prophet Sal Allaahu Alaiyhi wa Sallam was praying one night, he placed his hands on the earth and a scorpion stung him, thus the messenger of Allaah Sal Allaahu Alaiyhi wa Sallam killed it with his sandals, then when he turned away, he said
“May Allaah’s curse be upon the scorpion. It doesn’t leave alone one who is praying nor other than him” (or he said “a prophet or other than him”), then he called for salt and water.
He placed it in a utensil, started to pour it on his finger where he was stung, and he wiped it whilst reciting
And
And he mentions two more ways.” (Curing oneself by the Qur’aan” Page 33)
And Allaah knows best
