What to Do when it Rains

by Asma bint Shameem

1. Ask Allaah to make the rain good and beneficial for you and for everyone.

🍃 Aishah radhi Allaahu anhaa said that when the Messenger of Allaah ﷺ saw rain, he would say:

‎“اللّهُمَّ صَيِّـباً نَافِعاً”

“Allahumma sayyiban nafi‘an”

“O Allaah, (make it) a beneficial downpour).”

(al-Bukhaari 1032)

2. Stand under the rain

Let the rain wet a part of you.

Soak up some of the water as rain water is blessed.

That’s what the Prophet ﷺ used to do.

🍃 Anas radhi Allaahu anhu said:

“When we were with the Messenger of Allaah ﷺ , it rained.

The Messenger of Allaah ﷺ lifted part of his garment so that the rain could fall on him.

We said:

“O Messenger of Allaah, why did you do that?”

He said:

“Because it has just come from its Lord Subhaanahu wa Ta’aala.”

(Saheeh Muslim 898)

3. Perfect time to make duaa

One of the times when duaa is more likely to be accepted is when it rains.

So take full advantage of this blessed time and make lots of duaa.

🍃 The Prophet ﷺ said

“Two (du‘as) are not rejected: du‘a at the time of the call to prayer and du‘a at the time of rain.”

(al-Hakim in al-Mustadrak 2534, at-Tabarani in al-Mu‘jam al-Kabir 5756; Saheeh by al-Albaani in Sahih al-Jami‘ 3078).

4. When the rains gets severe, seek Allaah’s protection

🍃 When the rain grew severe, the Prophet ﷺ said:

‎اللّهُمَّ حَوالَيْنا وَلا عَلَيْنا”

‎اللَّهُمَّ عَلَى الآكَامِ وَالظِّرَابِ ، وَبُطُونِ الأَوْدِيَةِ ، وَمَنَابِتِ الشَّجَرِ

“Allahumma hawalayna wa la ‘alayna; Allahumma ‘ala al-akami wa’z-zirabi, wa butun al-awdiyah wa manabit ash-shajar

“O Allaah, (let the rain fall) around us and not upon us, O Allaah, (let it fall on) the small mountains and hillocks, the valley bottoms and places where trees grow).”

(al-Bukhaari 1014).

Or if the duaa is too long for you to memorize, just say the first part:

‎اللّهُمَّ حَوالَيْنا وَلا عَلَيْنا

5. If there’s thunder, glorify Allaah Subhaanahu wa Ta’aala

🍃 Abdullah ibn az-Zubayr radhi Allaahu anhu said that when he heard thunder he would stop speaking and would say:

‎سُبْحَانَ الَّذِي يُسَبِّحُ الرَّعْدُ بِحَمْدِهِ وَالْمَلَائِكَةُ مِنْ خِيفَتِهِ

Subhaan alladhi yusabbih ar-ra‘du bi hamdihi wa'l-malaa’ikatu min kheefatihi

“Glory be to the One whom the thunder glorifies and praises, and so do the angels because of His Awe) [cf. ar-Ra‘d 13:13].

Then he would say:

“This is a stern warning to the people of earth.”(al-Bukhari in al-Adab al-Mufrad 723); Saheeh by al-Albaani in Saheeh al-Adab al-Mufrad 556).

6. Thank Allaah Subhaanahu wa Ta’aala for the rain

Once the rain has come to a stop, thank Allaah and say

“We have received rain from Allaah’s bounty and mercy”.

🍃 Zayd ibn Khaalid al-Juhani radhi Allaahu anhu said:

“The Messenger of Allaah ﷺ led us in praying Fajr at al-Hudaybiyah, following rainfall during the night.

When he had finished praying, he turned to the people and said,

‘Do you know what your Lord has said?’

They said, ‘Allaah and His Messenger know best.’

He said,

‘This morning one of My slaves became a believer in Me and one became a disbeliever.

As for the one who said,

“We have been given rain by virtue of Allaah and His mercy,” he is a believer in Me and a disbeliever in the stars.

But as for the one who said, “We have been given rain by such and such a star,” he is a disbeliever in Me and a believer in the stars.’”

(al-Bukhaari 801 and Muslim 104)

And Allaah knows best
