When we read Surah al-Kahf, we read about Ya’jooj and Ma’jooj.
Who are they?
Where do they live?
When will they come out?
To know more about them, read on.
🍃Allaah says:
“Then he (Dhul Qarnain) followed (another way), until, when he reached between two mountains, he found, before (near) them (those two mountains), a people who scarcely understood a word.
They said: “O Dhul-Qarnain! Verily! Ya’jooj and Ma’jooj (Gog and Magog) are doing great mischief in the land.
Shall we then pay you a tribute in order that you might erect a barrier between us and them?”
He said: “That (wealth, authority, and power) in which my Lord had established me is better (than your tribute). So help me with strength (of men). I will erect between you and them a barrier.”
“Give me pieces (blocks) of iron,” then, when he had filled up the gap between the two mountain-cliffs, he said: “Blow,” till when he had made it (red as) fire, he said: “Bring me molten copper to pour over it.”
So they (Ya’jooj and Ma’jooj) were made powerless to scale it or dig through it.
(Dhul-Qarnain) said: “This is a mercy from my Lord, but when the Promise of my Lord comes, He shall level it down to the ground.
And the Promise of my Lord is ever true.”
And on that Day (i.e. the Day Ya’jooj and Ma’jooj will come out), We shall leave them to surge like waves on one another, and the Trumpet will be blown, and We shall collect them all together.” (Surah al-Kahf: 93-99)
🔷 Ya’jooj and Ma’jooj are two huge nations of human beings.
They are NOT “Aliens” or “Zombies” or some other creatures.
📌Proof:
🍃The Prophet ﷺ said:
“Allaah will say (on the Day of Resurrection): ‘O Adam.’ Adam will reply: ‘Labbaik wa Sa’daik’, and all the good is in Your Hand.’
Allaah will say: ‘Bring out the people of the fire.’
Adam will say: ‘O Allaah! How many are the people of the Fire?’
Allaah will reply: ‘From every one thousand, take out nine-hundred-and ninety-nine.’
At that time children will become hairy headed, every pregnant female will have a miscarriage, and one will see mankind as drunken, yet they will not be drunken, but dreadful will be the Wrath of Allaah.
The companions of the Prophet ﷺ asked:
‘O Allaah’s Messenger! Who is that (excepted) one?’
He said: ‘Rejoice with glad tidings; one person will be from you and one-thousand will be from Ya’jooj and Ma’jooj …’”
(al-Bukhaari 3348, Muslim 222)
This Hadeeth proves that Ya’jooj and Ma’jooj are actual human beings.
🔷 Ya’jooj and Ma’jooj have been living on earth for centuries and still live somewhere on earth as we speak.
The scholars said that they live in the east but we don’t know their exact location.
🍃The scholars of the Standing Committee said:
“They are human beings from the children of Adam, the father of mankind Alayhis Salaam.
They are living on this earth in the Furthest East.
(Fatawa Al-Lajnah Al-Da'imah no. 6951-2)
🔷 They caused a lot of mischief on earth so Allaah enabled the great king Dhul Qarnain to entrap them behind a wall.
🔷 Ya’jooj and Ma’jooj are digging every day, even as we speak!
They keep trying to escape every day ever since they were trapped but have been unsuccessful all this while.
🍃 Umm Habibah bint Abi Sufyan reported from Zaynab bint Jahsh radhi Allaahu anhaa that the Prophet ﷺ entered upon her in an agitated state and said:
“Laa ilaaha ill-Allaah, woe to the Arabs from an evil that has approached!
Today a hole like this has been opened in the barrier of Ya’jooj and Ma’jooj”
and he made a circle with his thumb and forefinger.
Zaynab bint Jahsh said:
“I said, ‘O Messenger of Allaah, will we be destroyed even though there are righteous people among us?’
He said, ‘Yes, if evil becomes overwhelming.’”
(al-Bukhaari 3097).
🔷However one day, Ya’jooj and Ma’jooj will be allowed to come out, by Allaah’s Permission.
🍃 Allaah says:
“Until, when Ya’jooj and Ma’jooj are let loose (from their barrier), and they swoop down from every mound.
And the true promise (Day of Resurrection) shall draw near (of fulfillment). Then (when mankind is resurrected from their graves), you shall see the eyes of the disbelievers fixedly stare in horror.”
(Surah al-Anbiyaa 21: 96-97)
🍃 Abu Hurayrah radhi Allaahu anhu said:
“The Messenger of Allaah
Sal Allaahu Alaiyhi wa Sallam said that Ya’jooj and Ma’jooj are digging every day until they can almost see sunlight, then the one who is in charge of them says,
“Go back, we will dig again tomorrow.”
Then Allaah restores (the barrier) and makes it stronger than it was.
(This will continue) until the appointed time.
When Allaah wishes to send them against the people, they will dig until they can almost see sunlight, then the one who is in charge of them will say, “Go back, we will dig again tomorrow, In shaa Allaah.”
This time he will say “in shaa Allaah”, so when they come back (the next day), they will find it as they left it, so they will dig their way out and emerge to attack the people.
They will dry up water (by drinking it, because of their great numbers), and the people will seek to protect themselves from them in their fortresses.
They will fire their arrows into the sky, and the arrows will come back down covered in blood (as a test for them), and they will say, “We have defeated the people of the earth and have gained the upper hand over the people of heaven.”
Then Allaah will send worms on the napes of their necks, which will kill them.
The Messenger of Allaah
Sal Allaahu Alaiyhi wa Sallam
said: “By the One in Whose hand is my soul, the beasts of the earth will grow fat from their flesh.”
(Saheeh Ibn Maajah, 3298)
🍃 Shaykh Al-Albaani said:
“Until when [the dam of] Gog and Magog [Ya’jooj and Ma’jooj] has been opened and they, from every elevation, descend …,’ [21:96]
There is no doubt that believing in the people known as Gog and Magog is a correct Islamic belief, due to it being present in the Qur’aan and due to the story and its details [also] being related in the Sunnah.
The barrier mentioned in the verse before this one in the Noble Qur’aan is the one our Prophet ﷺ spoke about in the authentic Hadeeth , i.e., that behind this barrier are the people of Ya’jooj and Ma’jooj and that every day they betake themselves to it in order to escape from it to [the rest of] the world, licking it with their tongues until when they [do get through it enough that they can] see a ray of light they say:
‘Tomorrow we will complete it and then leave through it”
but when they come back they find it to have reverted to how it initially was.
[It will carry on like this] until when Allaah Subhaanahu wa Ta’aala [finally] permits them to leave, He will inspire some of them to say,
“Tomorrow, inshaa Allaah,”
so they then come back to the barrier … and find that it is as they had left it and carry on doing what they were doing and then they will, ‘… from every elevation, descend …’ as the Lord of the Worlds said.”
(Fataawaa Jeddah, 15b)
🔷 When will Ya’jooj and Ma’jooj appear?
Ya’jooj and Ma‘jooj will appear AFTER Isaa Alayhis Salaam will kill the Dajjaal.
They will emerge and wreak havoc upon the earth, upon the people, their land and their cattle.
🍃The Prophet ﷺ said:
“… Then a people whom Allaah will have protected from the Dajjaal will come to Jesus, son of Mary, and he will wipe over their faces and inform them of their ranks in Paradise.
It will be under such conditions that Allaah will reveal to Jesus these words:
“I have brought forth from among My servants such people against whom none will be able to fight; you take these people (the believers) safely to Mount Toor”;
and then Allaah will send Ya’jooj and Ma’jooj and they will swarm down from every slope.
The first of them will pass the lake of Tiberias and drink out of it.
And when the last of them passes, he will say:
“There was once water there… “
Isaa and his companions will then be besieged there so that the head of an ox will be dearer to them than one hundred Dinaars are to you; and Allaah’s Messenger, Isaa and his companions will supplicate Allaah, Who will send insects to them (Ya’jooj and Ma’jooj), which attack their necks; and in the morning they will perish like one single person.
Allaah’s Messenger Isaa and his companions will then come down to the earth and they will not find on the earth as much space as a single span which is not filled with their putrefaction and stench.
Isaa and his companions will then again beseech Allaah, Who will send birds whose necks are like those of Bactrian camels, and they will carry them and cast them wherever Allaah wills.
Then Allaah will send rain which no house of clay or tent of camel hair keeps out, and it will wash clean the earth until it looks like a mirror.
Then the earth will be told to bring forth its fruit and restore its blessing.” (Saheeh Muslim)
🍃And the Prophet ﷺ said:
“The tribes of Ya’jooj and Ma’jooj will be set free and they will emerge as Allaah says,
وَهُمْ مِنْ كُلِّ حَدَبٍ يَنْسِلُونَ
‘And they will come swooping down from every mound.’ (Surah al-Anbiyaa 21:96)
They will spread throughout the earth, and the Muslims will flee from them until the remainder of the Muslims seek refuge in their cities and fortresses, taking their flocks with them.
Ya’jooj and Ma’jooj will pass by a river and drink from it until they leave nothing behind, and the last of them will follow in their footsteps and one of them will say, ‘There was once water in this place.’
They will prevail over the earth, then their leader will say, ‘These are the people of the earth, and we have finished them off.
Now, let us fight the people of heaven!’
Then one of them will throw his spear towards the sky, and it will come back down smeared with blood.
And they will say, ‘We have now killed the people of heaven.’
While they are like that, Allaah will send a worm like a worm that is found in the noses of sheep, which will penetrate their necks and they will die like locusts, one on top of the other.
In the morning the Muslims will not hear any sound from them and they will say, ‘Who will sell his soul for the sake of Allaah and see what they are doing?’
A man will go down, having prepared himself to be killed by them and he will find them dead, so he will call out to his people,
‘Glad tidings to you all, for your enemy is dead!’
Then the people will come out and let their flocks loose, but they will not have anything to graze on except their flesh, and they will become very fat as if they were grazing on the best vegetation they ever found.” (Saheeh Ibn Maajah 4079)
🍃 During his night journey the Prophet ﷺ met Isaa Alayhis Salaam and Isaa Alayhis Salaam said:
“The people will supplicate to Allaah (to save them from Ya’jooj and Ma’jooj) and I will pray to Allaah to kill them.
The earth will be filled with their stench and the people will supplicate to Allaah and I will pray to Allaah, then the sky will send down rain that will carry them and throw them in the sea.
Then the mountains will turn to dust and the earth will be stretched out like a hide.
I have been promised that when that happens, the Hour will come upon the people, just like a pregnant woman whose family does not know when she will suddenly give birth.”
(Ibn Maajah 4081; saheeh)
🔷 Ya’jooj and Ma’jooj are REAL.
The wall is REAL.
Just because mankind has not found or their wall does not mean that it does not exist.
🍃Shaykh al-Albaani said:
“So now, the doubt which is thrown around these days—emanating from the disbelievers and ending among some of those [Muslims] who are weak in knowledge, if not weak in eemaan, where these people claim even more than the disbelievers do, these people weak in knowledge and eemaan claim things the disbelievers don’t even claim about themselves—saying:
“The non-Muslims have covered the entire globe and are acquainted with all of it, from its mountains to its plateaus, plains, rivers, seas, forests and so on,’ there is no place left, according to them, that they haven’t traversed”
—the disbelievers themselves don’t even make this claim.
This is because, regretfully, we acknowledge that the disbelievers don’t believe in anything except scientific research and it is this scientific research that causes them to refrain from claiming something they don’t have knowledge about such that they will say, ‘We reached this point but we don’t know what is beyond it.’
As for those in our Ummah who are weak in knowledge and eemaan … … so I say:
“this is a claim bereft of any proof.
It is obligatory on the believer to believe in the Qur’aan and the Hadeeth of the Prophet ﷺ.
The very least that can be said is that he believes in these things more than his belief in what the disbelievers say and [more than his belief] in their research and experiments, and if the Qur’aan has openly declared the presence of a barrier there and of a people behind said barrier and that a time will come when they escape from it, then this means that the disbelievers [fall under the description that Allaah mentioned, when He said], talking about all creatures in general,
“… and of knowledge you have been given but a little.” [17:85]
from the knowledge that they have not acquired to this day is where Dhul-Qarnain’s barrier or the people who are behind it are.
It is, without doubt, on this earth—‘
“Allaah knows and you do not.” [2:216]
Therefore, let no-one be confused into thinking that the disbelievers have explored all the world, for this is a false claim.”
(Fataawaa Jeddah, 15b)
🔷 Believing in Ya’jooj and Ma’jooj is PART of our Imaan.
And anyone who denies their existence is considered a disbeliever according to the scholars.
🍃Shaykh Ibn Baaz said:
“There are authentic and Mutawaatir (collectively contiguous) Ahaadeeth reported on the authority of the Messenger of Allaah ﷺ about the descent of Prophet ‘Isaa (Jesus), son of Mary Alayhis Salaam from the heaven at the end of time, and about the emergence of Ya’jooj and Ma’jooj... all these veracities have been confirmed with authentic and Mutawaatir) Ahaadeeth attributed to the Prophet ﷺ;
and denying them constitutes disbelief and misguidance.
We ask Allaah Subhaanahu wa Ta’aala to bless us with safety and well-being.
There is no doubt about the veracity of Ad-Dajjaal (The Antichrist), the Christ (‘lsaa ibn Maryam), and Ya’jooj and Ma’jooj, and there are authentic) Ahaadeeth reported with Tawaatur (collectively contiguous narrations) about them from the Prophet ﷺ.”
